I am surprised.

Why wouldn't they?
Most major Nintendo GC releases have had TV advertising.

Because it's a little off the mainstream and I haven't seen other Nintendo RPGs get ads on TV (not since the 64).

Nintendo haven't made any GC RPGs yet as far as I can remember. FE and the new Pokemon are the first ones I think.

I was mainly thinking of Paper Mario.
The sort of thing I was pointing out is that they fail to properly advertise something like Pikmin 2 and then put an advert up for Fire Emblem.
Not that I'm saying they shouldn't, it's just that a lot of RPGs aren't the biggest sellers compared to other titles (and this combined with the GC being 3rd in the uk console line would make it an odd decision in some people's eyes) and I guess this is one of their big chirstmas games to plug.
I just didn't expect it to have an ad.

Oh yeah PM2, I think I did see an advert for that..
Nintendo Europe don't seem to advertise sequels though. There was loads for MP, but none for MP2. They seem to be working on the assumption that everyone heard about the first one and will automatically be aware of the second...

They work from a lot of very strange assumptions, though.
But, any advertising is good advertising, even if it seems rather random which games get it and which don't.
Just advertise Zelda until it explodes, or I will be very angry.

Yeah I agree.
Although after the disaster of Pikmin 2 and Metroid Prime 2, perhaps the finest Gamecube titles around, I'm sure they learnt their lesson.
Ha!
Just remembered they did the same for Donkey Konga 2. No one really bought that either.

It's not just the choice of game that seems a little odd, but the timing. I can't recall seeing many GC adverts back in the days when people actually wanted to play it. One now, is very much out of the blue.

I guess they have to do something to keep their presence alive - the FE advert will also remind people that the gamecube, and even ninty themselves, are still around.

There was a Geist advert a little while back.
It is Mario's 20th Birthday and so Mario Baseball, Dance Dance Mario, Mario Strikers, Mario Tennis (GBA), Dr. Mario/puzzle league (GBA) and Mario Kart (DS) are all launching in celebration. Should swing some sales Nintendo's way.

Perhaps if Nintendo had advertised (properly) 2-3 years ago when the Cube was new then sales might be better than they currently are!
I would love, absolutely LOVE to be the advertising guru for Nintendo.

Agreed you don't see nearly as many Nintendo adverts as they used to be. I think they thought their reputation would carry them through without spending millions on advertising but it's backfired.

It's not their fault Nintendo have a low advertisement budget.
There were as many adverts now as there were last year. In fact Donkey Konga adverts were all over the place.
And the Mario Kart advertisement was huge.
Nintendo prefer products to support themselves. They, for example, wish to break even on the Gamecube, so if they earn little from the cube then you'll see very few adverts.
Nintendo advertise new products A LOT. As well as major releases.

more aggressive adverts would definitely help Nintendo, especially now when they are at a cross roads with fan - too many delays, let-downs etc causing lots of previously-nintendo fans moving to camp Microsoft.
but with the DS on the up and up, maybe they can do the same thing with the revolution next year as they both have similar stragegies - something fresh to get new gamers, girls and even OAPs on board. and this strategy is currently working for the DS, and its working well!
and with news of a global launch of the revo in the space of 4 months, it looks like Nintendo finally realise that they need to be much more aggressive.
saw an ad for Advance Wars: DS on the tv there the last day, pretty funny i thought (and an amazing game also!).

But thats just a vicious circle isn't it?
Launch the Cube with minimal advertising, not many people on board. Cube sells worse than expected, sales drop further. Reduce advertising, sales drop further, even less people on board. sales drop even further, reduce advertising. Cube dies a death, everyones happy!
Yay! Go Nintendo!

The Gamecube has long failed. It is all well and good appealing to anyone coming late but it is all about the next gen now.
Revolution is strikingly original and clever and will certainly sell very well.
Looking forward to it.

If the Revolution is given the same advertising treatment (read: abuse) as the Gamecube, then it's a gonner for sure. But if Nintendo really push it, I think it could do a DS and be hugely sucessful.

The Gamecube was heavily advertised when launched.
If the system gets good word of mouth then advertisement does not need to be huge. The DS is advertised very well, better than ever before. But the Revolution will get loads of advertisement to start off with and hopefully things will snowball from there and Nintendo will have the confidence to continue to push it.

Indeed, that in particular has been a massive new idea for Nintendo.
Nintendo tend to promote a "franchise" rather than individual games. Think Pokemon, it was promoted as a franchise and not as a game.
Same applies to Mario....
