Metal Gear obviously, Splinter Cell was a poor imiatation of Syphon Filter and pile of crap.
I'm playing through MGS4 at the moment. It takes a special kind of suckage to make a ninja uncool but Raiden does it.

like werewolf said maybe mgs 1 is tedious but 2 3 4 all have ties to 1 if u don't play mgs1 you will not get the entire game series and maybe there will be a 5 metal gear with another good character, at least metal gear is making good sequels without bugs or defects in the games and alot more play time. slpinter cell sequels had a few defects which some say isnt bad but i want a game that is without skipping or scene cuts to where you dont get the whole story.

I think people are losing sight of the fact that MGS isn't supposed to be 'realistic'.
Splinter Cell is based on real-life black-ops. MGS is a similar style, but is more based on Japanese Manga - hence the giant robots the game takes its name from.
Other than the fact that they both have a stealth aspect, they're really quite different games.

Well i've got both mgs3 and splintercell 1 and 3, 1 does get tedious but 3 is genius.
In some parts splintercell is more realistic, for instance life but unrealistic for instance talking by sam fisher when your just about to grab a guard but the story line is really really bad.
But in mgs3 you actually get wounds and have to eat but it does have electric guys, and guys who go invisible, but thats to make it more interesting and challenging. It also has a greater array of weapons. Splintercell is extreme stealth for those who like just stealth. But mgs3 is for people who both enjoy action and stealth and has a better story line.
Because of this i believe that mgs is better as being more inventive, realsitic and having a far better story line.

Goldeneye was a classic.
One thing which it would do better than MGS is multiplayer. I mean, it's hard to be stealthy split screen, right?

There's an entire mode where the object is not to get spotted. It's good fun and quite a challenge.

LOADS of games have stealth/plan/tactical thinking nowadays.
Ghost Recon 2 was superb at it - despite it being more actiony, co-op in Live was sublime, simply cos you had to plan.
Or kill Creepy. Still.
Goldeneye was mint - taking cover from the enemy on 00 Agent was essential.

On the highest setting against infinite enemies? Takes a fair bit of planning and then of course there's shaving the seconds off the missions to unlock cheats, weapons and secrets which takes planning.

None the less, there was a lot of it. How long can you honestly say you sat there playing Goldeneye and planned the way you moved through the level? Wasn't it mostly, run here, shoot here, grab this, take this over here and so on and so forth?

2) Thief 3 does all you've mentioned much better.
Infact Ghost Recon does it better too.

yeah! Goldeneye was brilliant, but again its just a walk in, shoot the baddies, maybe pick something up or plant a bomb or two, and then be on yuor merry way.
Metal Gear Solid will actually make you think about what you're doing.
-Recon
-Planning
-Execution
Whether your playing MGS or SC, these are the three main steps you will need to follow to play the game effectivly. Find out where your enemies are and watch their patrol routes/behaviour. Plan an effective way around them. Do it. I find that more "immersive" than something like goldeneye. "Get here - kill all who stand in your way".

If it's an immersive game I like it when they have 'cutscenes' that are performed using the game engine rather than an FMV movie that breaks the immersion.
Ocarina of Time or Goldeneye for instance.
It's also cheaper which means more money cna go into the actualy game and gameplay rather than cash-consuming cutscenes.
I didn't find MGS2 to be immersive though so it didn't matter very much, except I really did want to get on with playing the game half-way through some of the cutscenes.

Long cutscenes are fine in RPG's considering there's still about 30 hours of actual gameplay there, in MGS there isn't. You're lucky to get to about 5 hours of actual gameplay in a MGS game. That is what i don't like about them.

I know I'm a huge fan and therefore MGS can do little wrong....but I don't think there are many flaws at all. In fact, the ONLY thing I would improve is the complex controls. I think the gameplay, graphics, sound are spot on, and I even love the cut-scenes. I'm a leftoverw from the era that loved cut-scenes. Anyone remember a time where a FFVII FMV was a major reward? Anyone remember huge FMV sequences at the end of a game, like FFVIII, that made you feel like all your hard work was worth it?
MGS still has that attitude. I can't stand it when you play a game through (especially something like FF where it takes you 30 hours+) andf it gives you this piddly little scene at the end and your done (cough...Final Fantasy X and X-2...). It just...doesn't feel right!
Even in something like PES, winnign a trophey hasn't been the same since PES2, where you got a nice rendition of "we are the champions" and.."highlights" from the final.

Both are great. SC is a little more action orientated.
Both have stupid annoying flaws and suck in some respects.

Chaos Theory's the best one.
Also explains why you're complaining about the "Don't use lethal force" sections of the old games.

and no doubt more were taken from Thief.
Ever played Operation: Winback? It's the Konami title that really should have eclipsed the MGS series.
