Reasons why i should get a PSP??

Original Post:
Well i am basically thinking of getting a PSP 3000 + FF: Dissidia for like £135 for my Birthday. I have a DS and use it a decent amount but have started to let it dwindle as there are not always the more grown up games i like. There are some but they seem to hit in spells.

I owned a PSP when they first came out and sold it because i needed the cash, i was just wondering how things have moved on with the console and what big games are out or on the horizon!

Could anyone shed some light and help me make a sensible answer as to if i should get one!?!?!

FF: Dissidia is a tempting game, Jak & Daxter was one of my favourite games and the next installment is on PSP, but i am wondering if i might get bored of it and it ends up in the box gathering dust.

Keep your DS, Pandoras Box came out last week. Plus Zelda is out next month.

'nuff said.

pb reviewed the PSP3000 i believe and that had some minor details between the old and new versions.

PSP Go though, I dunno. pb is the man to ask. Although there are bad things about the PSP GO which you may wanna consider waiting a while for
The price will probably drop quick quickly at Chrimbo

I will wait for pb to respond, he seems pretty keen on the PSP at the moment so shouldnt take long lol.

The PSP Go looks nice and if it was the same price i would heavily consider it. Just trying to think what i should get my GF to get me for my birthday, might get her to go halves on an HDTV or something

Just seen this!

Right:

Reasons to get a PSP (Generic)
The PSP has some wonderful graphics and over the years has built up some great games.

Yesterday, a plethora (I love that word) of games went up on the store.  This means that whatever model PSP you buy, you can get an 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (not on ebay, try keeping an eye on Play.com and ebuyer) and download them.

It also plays movies in MP4 format and the free PSP Video 9 software converts DVDs and your downloaded (ahem) movies to the right format and quality.  The movie playback is very clear and I've watched a few movies coming back from work on the bus.

It will play music too.  The music player is basic but pretty nice and functional.

The Minis – A new set of small apps like games from the iTunes app store and for about the same price.  So far 13 have gone up but there are more promised each week and some are remakes from the app store with additional levels and better graphics.

Media GO! is a Sony application like iTunes which syncs your podcasts, audio, video and games (plus saves) between PC and PSP, allowing you to backup games, movies etc from the memory stick and put them back on very quickly and easily.

PSN cards.  Now you cat get a PSN card, a bit like (ok, a lot like) the Microsoft points cards to save you having to use a credit/debit card directly on the store.

Movies/TV series on the go – Next month Sony launch their UK movies service which you can access from the PSP and PS3.  It will be similar to the Xbox 360 service but will let you buy movies and tv shows to keep as well as rent.

Comics service – again, launching soon, the PSP comics service lets you download recent and back calalogue comics to watch with the special comic viewer.  So far Marvel are on board but Sony expect take up from other companies (DC, Dark Horse etc) later.

Price of games.  Getting a 3000 or the older machines you can go to CEX and pick up games for £5.  Good games too.  IGN ran an article last month on the top PSP games to give you an idea of which ones to get, but you can’t go wrong for £5!  (that said, I’d recommend getting the PSP itself from Gamestation or Game where you can get the 2 years extra cover with accidental damage for a small amount).

Even online some of the game are now £9.99 or £14.99 and there’s a cut down version of Rockband Uplugged just gone up on the PSN for £3.19.

Against the PSP
It really depends on what type of games you like to play, though with the catalogue now containing stuff as varied as Locoroco, Rockband Unplugged and GT PSP there’s pretty much stuff for everyone.  It still doesn’t have the back catalogue to match the DS though.

I miss the touchscreen of the DS/iPod, but it’s a different machine and doesn’t need it.

FPS games aren’t fantastic with one stick, though the control systems get around this, but it’s still not perfect.

Reasons to get each of the PSPs
Well, this is a bit more complicated so I'll break it down:

Option 1 - the money saver
You could save a lot of money and go for a fat model (PSP1000), but it's bigger and uglier and doesn't have TV out or a microphone.

Option 2 - The middle ground
A PSP2000 looks nice and has TV out, but the colours aren't as varied and the screen isn't as bright or colourful as a 3000, plus it doesn't have a microphone for skype calls or the apps that use it.

Option 3 - Personal Favourite
The PSP 3000.  Has all the benefits of the 1000 and 2000 plus brighter screen, better colours on screen and a microphone.  Plus the silver, vibrant blue and red colours are lovely (I have the blue)

Option 4 - The 'Made of Money' option
Basically, the PSP GO!
+ It looks great
+ if you get it now and register you'll get GT PSP for free (before 10th)

However, it's pretty expensive for what it is and the battery life is smaller thanks to a slightly smaller (and non-removable) battery.

Thanks for the detail pb, i was looking at the blue one aswell lol.

To be honest my main sway in these kind of things are the games, all the movies and other bits will not do much for me and i have an ipod touch for my music. So i am looking at some games which looks great but then there are not all that many which may warrant me using a present claim to get this.

I think i will need to look into the games more, but thanks for the advice and i would go with a 3000 not a go, based on the price and all your help!

Star Ocean and FF Crisis Core are both good games for the PSP. You also of course have the FF legacy on there.....

That and the fact that you can get someone with a PS3 to download FF7 onto a drive for you to use on ya PSP (I could do that for u). And FF8 is bound to be released on PSN eventually.

Brave Story: New Traveller
Final Fantasy: Tactics
Jeane d'Arc
Tales of Eternity

Some decent RPG's....or meant to be at least.

If you like your tower defence games too then there are a few really good ones like Pixel Junk Monsters out there.

There are puzzle games, unusual games (Locoroco, Patapon...), some great driving games (GTA, Gran Turismo, NFS Shift, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer), music games (Rockband Unplugged)...

Plenty more than there used to be.

£8 for FF7. It's as good as always. But you could just ask someone who has downloaded it...

The only thing that usually holds stuff up for Sony (other than localisation, which shouldn't be a problem with a game like this that's been out before) is that the European QC for PSN is a stickler for detail and keeps rejecting items, so developers have to go back and add or remove stuff then find another window for release.

It's a bit like Nasa shuttles returning to Earth, by the sound of it, missing their window or having something go wrong.  Woe betide Sony and Nasa ever teaming up...  :D

I don't know mate. I would assume it would be as the sheer amount of money that FF7 re-release made would warrant it. If I could re-release something at more or less no effort for £1,000,000 I know I would.

As I ruined my FF8 disc, it's quite handy for me.

FF8 was good, but i started it and stopped and lost memory about 4 times, so going back and doing ifrits cave again would probably bring me to tears lol.

FF7 and FF9 for me were more fun, never got far enough to learn the story of FF8. (feel we are moving into the RPG thread a bit again lol)

Yey! traded in a memory stick yesterday (spare one) and got enough for a PSN voucher from Gamestation.

Got some of the Minis to try out, plus Pixeljunk Monsters (a tower defence game) and still have enough for another downloadable game.

Have to choose one from:
Locoroco 2 (already have the first on UMD)
Pursuit Force 2
Gran Turismo PSP
Soul Calibur
Motorstorm

Yeah, over 800 cars as well, and apparently you can use them in GT5 on the PS3 when it comes out.

I'm going to be downloading a lot as I trade in completed games for PSN cards I think, the idea of having all your games on a memory stick is great and it's all legit for a change :D
