Marble Madness meets Super Monkey Ball, with bells on.
Some levels are an out-and-out race; some levels require great care and concentration; some levels require tasks to be performed; but all are against the clock, and the 'boss' levels are a mix of all three styles.
72 levels in total, plus multi-player.
A simple concept, beautifully executed.
Frustrating and rewarding in equal measure, and as addictive as hell.
Better, in my humble opinion, than Lumines.

Completely unrelated - don't you like Arsenal anymore?
Why don't you post in the sports forum?

I do.
I don't go there because it winds me up too much.
Besides, we all know Arsenal are the greatest team in the world, so why bother arguing the point? :-)

Been toying with this as my next choice of game. Haven´t got Lumines yet though, so it´s a toss up between Fired Up, Lumines and this...

I nearly purchased this the other day after seeing you were buying it, I just looked into it and I liked the concept.
But then I thought of other expenses I have recently and turned myself off it...
It does indeed look quite good to play, a great handheld concept I think.
Saw it on £20 and 1 quid postage on ebay buy it now but I didn't buy it.

I found the game dull. Initially, the fresh concept is interesting (at best), but pretty soon you'll get bored, despite the "varied" levels. One of the poorer launch games.

On the contrary, it's generally considered one of the better launch titles.

How do you know? Sales figures aren't out yet, so the "generally" part is void.
And blah blah, differing tastes and all that, duh.

People will say good things about virtually every launch game, for any system.. as long as theyre playable.
Mercury is one of those that you'll play, might like for a day or two but then when other games come out, realise how crap it is.
And no its not too hard. Too crap and boring, guiding a blob around. Wheres the fun in that you raging homo.

Which just gores to show the overall quality of the launch lineup :).
Apparently this game becomes a nightmare to control when you have two sepereate pieces of mercury to control at opposite ends of the map and the camera is sub-standard at best.
That's just going on opinions I've read on the Net, not first hand though.

How do I know?
Reviews.
OPSM - 8/10
Gamespot - 7.8/10
IGN - 7.7/10 (average 8.4 from users who wrote reviews)
Games Radar - 8/10
PSP411 - 92/100
Gamerz Edge - 8/10
Differing tastes are fine, but that's more of an "I didn't enjoy it" thing. "One of the poorer launch games" is clearly untrue.

It's a nightmare when the Mercury is split, true - but that's all part of the game, not a 'problem' as such.
The camera is okay. It does zoom out to try and show all pieces, but you can rotate and zoom the camera at will, and zoom to any specific piece. Just takes some getting used to.

8/10 average (roughly, before someone gets a calculator out ;-) ) strikes me as being a really good game.
It'd be a game worth buying just because I refuse to buy any of the rehashes on the console which I wouldn't buy on the PS2 either, such as Virtua Tennis, Midnight Club, Need For Speed et al.

I'd recommend it.

You do understand personal opinion though yes? Games like Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo are widely regarded as "excellent games" and have consistently received high review scores. However, there will always be those people who don't like them. Those people aren't stupid, they just don't happen to like those games.
In the case of Mercury, the review scores were pretty good - over 8/10 average for a puzzle game is an excellent score and those scores are given by people who know what they're talking about and have played a huge variety of games on many consoles (and properly play tested them rather than dipping in for 10 minutes). On top of that, Wookiee Monster whose opinion is trusted by many on these forums (for a start he's a notable) has given the game his recommendation.
There will be people on the internet with similar feelings about the game and if Wookiee Monster chose to sell the game on e-bay, there would undoubtedly be potential buyers. Those people are not wrong, they just have a different opinion to you.
In summary, you think the game is bad and you are perfectly entitled to that opinion, but don't try and enforce that on other people, just state it as your own perspective and allow other people to enjoy a game they like.

Also, I am so confused now. I thought Monkey With Attitude had (whilst I was away) changed name to monkey man. Turns out they are two seperate people, so now, well, as I said, I'm confused.

Yep, and I've owned three versions including a free version I got on my mobile phone.
I refuse to pay £30 for something I've paid full price for twice before with very little new worth buying it for. I'm already fairly good at the game so it will hardly be a challenge.
I'd rather spend the money on something I don't have on any other console. Quite fancy NBA Street as a game which might be worth owning on a handheld console, never seen the point of it on a full console, but thoroughly enjoye playing it when my brother borrowed it.

I got Virtua Tennis through yesterday. Brilliant game, and as has been said, it works really well. Despite the good reviews, I'd been a little worried about how it would work on such a teeny analogue control, but it's great.

Does it do all that Wi-fi business with other PSPs to do doubles matches and stuff? Tennis games are always at their best with a little multiplayer action.

All 5 games I've bought are multiplayer. Just s shame that no-one else I know has bought a PSP yet. :-(

No, I used a review score from ONE magazine.
The others are websites.
Besides, whether you trust mag reviews or not, when all the review scores are similar, there's obviously something worthwhlie about the game.

I'm a little hesitant about Mercury. It does look good, and original, but I know there's gonna be some really frustrating levels and I'll probably just give up on it.

Yep, there's no doubt - some levels are incredibly frustrating.
So far, though, I've found the balance to be pretty good. There's a lot of 'just one more go' appeal, and I usually find that I crack the frustrating ones just as I'm about to give up.
Which, in my view, makes for a well-balanced game.

Part exchanged Fired Up for Mercury today and I'm glad I did, because it's brilliant. The physics are brillaint, the way the little blob of mercury reacts to every movement, and how it interacts with other things in the game, like dividers and other coloured bits of mercury (you have to mix certain colours for ceretain levels in the game in order to complete the stage). Highly addictive and highly recommended.
Fired up on the other hand, not so good. Very repetitive and very short.
