Suprised no one's made a topic on this already, but tis out today. I haven't got it yet - in the last month I've bought Wario, Resi and Splitters and they've kinda left me low on cash.
Those who got it today/have already imported (Psycho Fox, WS etc.), is it worth my money? I'm an RPG fan as ye may know, but an RPG fan slightly put off by all this card fighting business. So.. verdicts anyone?

It's out today?! Excellent, and I need a new game, too. I was planning on waiting for Fire Emblem for my RPG needs, but Baten Kaitos looks fantastic... I'll see what people have to say about it.

2nd best RPG after Skies of Arcadia.
Go buy.
If it wasn't for WoW I would have played through this again by now.

Heh, I too got it only yesterday, I will however definetly get Zelda GC (unless it's a universal release). What I have played so far has amazed me, and even though i'm not yet an expert of the battle system I still have been using it quite well. I'm so far at the Lower Celestial River trying to get past the Waterfall.
It's exactly what I thought it would be like, brilliant.

I wondered why I could only find this game on Game's website (Shock, horror!). Amazon had made a typo and called it Batten Kaitos. Idiots.
It's now ordered, and will be here monday. :)

Amazon don't pick up on a lot of things, they would have had "Batten kaitos" on the future release list a lot earlier than 2 months away even if a release date wasn't in the works, they did it with Tales.

OK, it hasn't despactched yet so I have the option of:
-Keeping Baten Kaitos ordered
-Changing it for ToS
-Adding ToS to the order (I'm in an RPG mood).
Well?

Add ToS, unless you've not played Skies yet. Can't remember if you have.

I'm tempted by Baiten Kaitos. I'm not a big RPG fan, but it DOES look good. I also need to pick up Skies at some point. Hopefully it will surpass my initial Dreamcast demo disappointment on cube.

Skies is supreme.. but like any RPG it takes a little while to get fully into it. If you excuse some ageing graphics it is true RPG brilliance.

I didn't give that a second look, and even i'm playing classic SNES RPG's and they have far worse graphics.

The graphics never worried me much, but if you've seen the Hi-Res screenshots of the Dreamcast version working on a PC via emulator, you begin to dream of what may have been.. Click Here

I COULD get this I suppose but I have spent £100 already this month on various things, and that's my limit. Hmm maybe wait until next month, or the month after that, or the one after that. I need to get Splinter Cell Chaos Theory as well.

Hmm... I think there's been a hitch in the release. It was no-where to be seen in GAME yesterday, and my Amazon order has been "Dispatching Soon" for two days...
Still, ToS will be here in a couple of days, so I'll either have 1 or 2 genius RPGs to play. :)

Well for one if you like good music in games then this will be the very frst thing you'll like about this game, it has a huge souund track of both exploration and battle music (not just the same old battle music over and over throughout the game) and not only that but the music playlist that you can listen to any music you have heard already at any time you want, I supose it's as if listening to every musical piece in the game is a small sidequest in itself.
Then there is the characters and the dialogue, all the characters have completely different personalities and my favourite one other than Kalas (the cool blue hairded rogue and main hero of the game) is Gibari (yes, yes, the on that says "The Bas**rds!!" in the trailer) because not only is one of the most powerfullest fighters you can get to play as, but he also brings the quite amusing sarcastic remarks here and there.
The story of the game is rival to that of Tales (which is one of the best I have seen) and the voice acting although slightly ruined by the constant loud background music can still be heard, plus with the aid of subtitles at every piece of dialogue (except in battle mode during special attacks) though that is not too much of a bother. Also I think the voice actor who plays Lyude isn't that great as he doesn't seem to bring too much emotion to the characer at times, but the other characters are certainly the opposite though.
The battle system is quite difficult to explain, but it is a lot better then in say "Lost Kingdoms" also being a card based battling RPG, and from my little experience of the game when I frst played it I found I got to grips with the battle system easily after the first few battles.
There are other points but it would be best left for first hand experience to find out what they are as this is a must have game.

Thanks, Fox :)
I'll definately buy this when I have the money (just checked and I'm a little short in my account >_<). Music is always a really important part of an RPG to me so it all sounds my sort of thing.

I'm not one for putting great music as one of the most wanted qualities of a game, so i was very surprised at the quality of the music within the game with about 50 different titles to listen from and that I actually liked it a lot even if it covers the speech a tad.
i basically put everything i said before into a reveiw for Baten Kaitos on Amazon, so I really do hope that my reveiw actually gets on the site seeing as my last 2 reveiws just dissapeared after sending them in :<

Can't you turn the music down a bit and voices up a bit like in most games?
Ah well, need to get this.

I think Kalas > Gibari > Savyna > Others.
My main party is Kalas, Gibari and Xhela. For a while Gibari was my strongest chracter until Kalas received his Platinum Bangle which totally pumped up his attack, defence and agility stats like crazy. I've been getting 1000 damage points for his 6 attacks, that doesn't include any of his special attacks though, otherwise it would have been even greater.

Use the skull items when you get them, they give the highest stats boost, although they inflict confusion upon the characters in battles, it's barely a hindrance at all.

Skoa is one king RPG. however, its pretty hardcore. without spoiling too much, u have to kill the last 3 bosses in one sitting, theres no save. ToS is much better for newcomers to the RPG genre due to its fast gameplay and relatively easy difficult. Skoa reigns surpreme when comparing characters/plot.
i bought BK today and ive played a couple of hours. first impression are very good. bosses come thick and fast and the battle system is great. graphics are best of an RPG on cube, but the thing that has struck me is the awwwwwesome soundtrack. its really quality, much like the rest of the game so far, great sidequests. if u like RPG u have to get this game. other RPG's will be ripping of the battle system for sure and it seems like a game that could well be one of the best on cube.

Heh, the last end bosses of SoA:L weren't too difficult even if it took about an hour to beat them all and including the ending credits. The ship battle was probably the easist part of that trio of bossess, coz I just rule with the main ship.

In reply to Tami ToS's character development is much better than Soa's thanks to the skits although the story in Skies is better. ToS is relatively easy but it makes up for it by being long.

na i think Soa's characters r better than ToS, even with the skits. alot of the development in skits isnt that crucical although it does add depth. the characters in ToS just arent up to scratch with other big RPG's. don't get me wrong i love ToS but for different reasons. its like Colette says "im sorry Lloyd blah blah this is all my fault". then Lloyd says "thats ok". i mean wtf kinda reply is that? i do like the characters of Presea, Regal and Sheena oh and ofcourse Kratos. But to be honest Lloyd sux for a main character, and i played a hell of a lot of RPG's, collette is wet, Genis is boring and Zelos is just a fagg. I love all the characters from SoA. even several NPC's are great. i like Kalas from BK too, he's different from ur typical japanese RPG hero. anyway buy the game and you'll see =D

Yeh I'd agree with that. The Skies character development is practically nil, apart from Fina becoming more air-piratey as the game goes on. It's probably because Tales has a larger playable cast, although the later characters in the story (Presea/Regal) never interested me and Genis was just a whining kid who I kicked out the party from the word go.
I don't know why Skies is better overall, but it is. It has Drachma in, that's probably why. Drachma > All.
